COMMENTARY:

Emotions I feel are what makes us tick... We react based on how we feel.
They are, I think, what we define in someone as being "lively". So are our emotions make us more alive inside to ourselves and to others?

There are polar opposites, people with too much emotion, or no emotion. Which is worse I've been wondering. Though the later perhaps hiding their emotions internally. Though we all go through phases or crisises in life inwhich cause us to react more or less.

I've being struggling with my emotions lately and at some points I guess found myself turning them off.

Build your own BluBoy PaperCraft Doll!
Just follow these steps:

1/ Download the 3 dieline images
2/ Print each one out on white paper on 8.5x11 size paper
3/ Carefully cut out each piece.
4/ Skor lightly all the glue flaps and fold them
5/ Glue each piece together. See your local arts and craft shop for a glue pen.
6/ Glue the feet to the body and glue the arms to the body. Glue the hair curl on the head. then sit the head onto the body and done!

Bluboy: Daily - The Last Pumpkin

COMMENTARY:
To me, the reason why I've written it is is about a fragile life and caring for it. And about fading memories and trying to hang on to them and not let go.
Blu likes to cling to the past sometimes... until he has to let go (when the pumpkin rots).
Sometimes life or our goals in life have to stop, when we are needed. And sometimes searching for or reaching for that goal their are obstacles that come our way that demand our time and attention.

The pumpkin the symbolizes the past or that fragile life we encounter with a loved one or friend.It's funny, everytime I put the pumpkin in these strips it seems to follow this same theme...

But at least for that little bit of time we have, it's time we can at least cherish with that person while we have them before they go....

Or a realization of a death of someone or a memory that will fade or is forgotten.
Of trying to hold on to that which we can't. But at least for that little bit of time we have, it's time we can at least cherish them or that person while we have them....

Bluboy: Daily - The Barn Owl

PS. some of have been noticing these are old strips. I am just slowly bringing eveything over into the BluBLOG.

A strip introducing a new background character.
(Lots of bird keep showing up in my comics... hmm, Not really sure why...)

The Barn Owl is a freaky looking bird. It has always given me the creeps. But is actually quiet a beautiful bird. So in saying that, this creature fits perfectly in Blu's world. This owl, being dead and a spirit, can see Bluboy. As do the Crows. The other aspect I like about this owl is it's Heart Shaped face. Which gives it such a unique look but also ties into the themes of relationships and heartache. A neat symbol for that...

Just another insecurity of blu's. At least Blu can admit it, he's not very smart. He sees a quality in the owl that he hopes to achieve or if not at least look to for guidance. For himself or for those that come to him for help....

COMMENTARY:

I received this cool fan comic illustrated and written by Josep Oliver writer of El Joven Lovecraft. It's so cute and funny. And actually shows a slightly darker side of BluBoy that not even I have seen yet... Poor Blu will do what ever it takes to have some fun and make a friend. So I took Cisne's fancomic and redid it. Though I changed the ending in my version, making Rommenoth's eye upset by not being noticed by his mummy. It might be out of character, but I thought it was cute...

COMMENTARY:

This was my very first BluBoy comic. I just updated it into the 3 panel format and retouched the art a bit...

BluBoy was first sketched after riding on the Subway home from work, back in October of 2004.
I was feeling lonely and saddened by my Father-In-Law's passing, so I created Blu.
My own best friend.

Intermingled with the theme of letting go of something you don't want to but know you have to. To either move on or because of what's right. Whether it be a relationship or... a pumpkin!? Or from the pumpkin's perspective, is it about abandonment?

CHARACTERS

PREMISE

BluBoy is a lonely ghost trying to make his way through the Afterlife, simply hoping to find a friend wherever or with whomever he can. His best friend, or so he thinks, is a spider he calls Cedric. Despite his feelings of loneliness and melancholy, BluBoy possesses a naive, undying will to find his place in the Afterlife and even one day peace. Through his journey, BluBoy becomes a special spirit who ends up helping other lost souls, thereby becoming an angel of sorts. Death is always lurking in the shadows, rejected for his frightful appearance, hoping to show BluBoy the way. Wandering through the cemetery, BluBoy meets all kinds of strange spirits and critters... in the spirit realm anything can happen.

This is a comic strip about the everyday afterlife of BluBoy.

PROLOGUE

These are the stories behind the stories... of a legend.

This is a tale of an angelic soul. The story of innocence becoming greatness. A spirit lost in a world of fear and sadness. An angel in the spirit realm whose love for others and determination grants him this high regard. Who helps and shares his hope to those that have lost theirs. Helping these souls find their way out of a limbo to that doorway home.

These are are the tales of an afterlife, a spirit they call BluBoy...

HAUNTING FACTS

Orbs: There are different types of orbs, found in most haunted areas or cemeteries. Some, unseen to the naked eye, captured on film. Others bright shining orbs seen quickly floating by appearing and disappearing. They are thought to be the energies of a human spirit and are said to be seen before a manifestation. Blue orbs are said to be that of a good spirit, a red orb is said to be that of an evil one.

Indian Legend: I heard, in a documentary, of an Indian Legend about Blue orbs seen by gravesites and cemeteries. They say these are of a special spirit that help those recently passed find there way out of limbo. This was interesting to me because I didn't here about this legend until recently. This was exactly what I was seeing BluBoy becoming, a helpful spirit to the lost souls he would come across in his cemetery.

Blue Boy (or Radiant Boy): Link In Chillingham Castle England, there is a famous ghost sighting of what they call the Blue Boy or Radiant Boy. Coming from a room in the castle crying and moaning on occasion could be heard from behind the fireplace or within the walls. At night a bright light of blue could be seen and sometimes a vision of a boy dressed in blue clothing. In the 1920's within a wall of the room, renovations were done. Behind the wall a skeleton of a boy was found alongside a skeleton of an older man. Also some blue material was found. I recall a documentary that mentioned the boys fingers were worn down as if trying to scratch his way out, also suggesting being buried alive.

Book for the Dead: The real Book(s) of the Dead. BluBoy's Book for the Dead is a spirit Book that can speak to BluBoy, acting as his spirit guide. Being a moody book, he doesn't do a whole lot to help him. The fact that BluBoy doesn't read very well also doesn't help.

I've always hated change. I avoid it like the plague, which can at times come back to haunt me. Change has always been hard for me to cope with. Moving to a new city, school, house. Changing myself, bad habits to even as small as changing my avatar... I've been through a lot of change good and bad. And yet change is a part of life and is usually a good thing. But why do I fear it so much?

So here is Zoe knowing a change is needed to purhaps get Whispers attention or simply move on. But what he thinks he sees scares him.

BluBoy Daily: Suicide

COMMENTARY:

This subject matter is an obvious topic to make its way into the BluBoy series and was only a matter time before it showed up...

I happened to be at a cemetery when this strip idea came to mind, not the character. My wife has been talking to me recently about an individual she knew growing up that has committed suicide. She just happened to stumble upon this persons grave in this cemetery. She later found out more about this persons death. I don't know all the details but it was bad. Normally I feel such pity for those I read about who take their own lives. Such a sad state of mind. But this story shocked me a little further. And also reminded me about those high school shootings. It made me think about what this spirit would be like, and what if they ran into Blu...

Some spirits in Blu's universe are simply too messed up for even BluBoy to tame. Suicide is not an evil spirit, but sits on the boarder of good and evil, which is why he is grey. Suicide not matter what or how it happens, the person causes enormous hurt to all those around. Even in the spirit world...

So if this really harsh. I don't mean it to be. Just maybe an eye opener... as with most of my comics...

This is a little tribute to Jeremy The Bear. Or also known as Colargol or Barnaby.

This show and character has so inspired my BluBoy Comics. And is one that has really made the most impact on me and what I feel when writing for BluBoy. It's theme of a cute, innocent little character doing his best to help his friends and is always in search of something greater than himself I find so fun and fascinating to watch...

My favourite episodes of the series is when he looses his whistle and cannot sing anymore. I just love him!!!

BluBoy Sketches: Reflections of Reality - A Tragic Soul

Tribute to Ian Curtis
what he would look like in Bluboy's realm:

COMMENTARY:

As you can see this entry is about Joy Division! Mainly that of Singer/Song Writter Ian Curtis. The master of dark emotion (A new term I came up with... Not sure if it makes sense).

I was just being inspired by the life of Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division. Who later form one of my favourite bands New Order.

Ian's music and lyrics are just so touching and inspiring. His themes of isolation and self-hate I find I'm drawn to. And is now, since his suicide, his music is much more full of questions and/or answers to his pain and suffering or to his observations of life and love. Which to me are also what drive my comics and my characters. Since the creation of my comic, I have been looking outside to other artists that I find who are exploring the world and similar questions as I am. Maybe more so for confirmation that I myself am not alone in my art. My comic was developed to try and maybe answer for me what an afterlife may be in contrast to our reality. It was created from sorrow within me and from life altering events I've experienced. Bluboy became the image of my hurt to ease my feelings of loneliness. Sometimes the hurt can give you strength and that facing it head on and not hiding from it can also give you that strength. Bluboy became my own way of soul searching and exploring the world's question of life and death.

As I see Ian has done with his music and in even what drove him in his life. It is these deep and sometimes harsh issues that seem to interest us all in some way. I like to look at the sadness in a happy light. Which is why my comic looks the way it does. I like to play with these emotions that I guess we all fight with at some point in our lives. Some more than others.

I did this little montage of images of Ian. I find such peace and strength when looking at these pictures, knowing I'm not alone in my hurt. It's so interesting to look at these photos and to see the life in his eyes, that are now... gone. And leaves you wondering why. It's a similar experience I try to achieve with my comics. Not all the time, but in some small way. To be on the outside looking in is where we wish we can all be. But are not...

Other: A personal note

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERY ONE!
Trying to sort out what items I put up in my BluBLOG...

This is more of a personal piece of information. Though as some of you know I love music, it plays a big role in my comics as inspiration or a referrences to the mood or background.

I just recently found Mat Flint on myspace and he has been kind enough to respond to my messages. Mat was the lead vocalist of an earlier 90's band from the UK, Revolver. If you love the Shoegazing geonra as much as I do you should take a listen to them. Mat is now apart of a new band called The Deep Cut another great sounding band. Thanks Mat!!!
